Whereas the rest of the world’s population is increasing the opposite is true for Japan where the population is decreasing, and significantly too. With a predicted population drop of one third by the year 2060 if things continue as they are, questions have been raised as to why this unexpected decrease? And the answer that’s come back is rather remarkable, because Japanese men prefer to have virtual girlfriends to real ones.

This unique group of Japanese men is called otaku and they are of a generation that has spent more of their childhood in a virtual world than a real one. They’ve grown up in the age of computer games and a significant number have decided to remain immersed in this virtual world in preference to the real world – and real women.

In one survey conducted, a whopping 36% of Japanese men aged 16 – 19 were found to have no interest in sex at all. In another survey of Japanese men and women in relationships only 27% said they had sex every week. Marriage rates are plummeting also – they just don’t seem that interested in sex!

The otaku believe themselves to be in committed relationships yes, but with their virtual girlfriends. Rather than taking out a real date the otaku will take their game consoles out on dates. One Japanese male in a virtual relationship plays a 15 year old in the game whereas in reality he is 38 years old. He takes photos with the console when they are out on dates and even has a real life wife too! He keeps his virtual girlfriend a secret from her of course…

There was even a program on this new phenomenon – “No Sex Please, We’re Japanese” which aired on BBC 2 in October.
